The Rolex Explorer 40 224270 is the current-generation Explorer scaled to 40mm. Rolex made the Explorer in 36mm for most of its history. The 40mm version arrived for people who wanted the same dial and the same simplicity in a larger case. Matte black with the 3-6-9 numerals. No date. No rotating bezel. The smooth domed bezel and the fully brushed Oyster bracelet are the standard Explorer setup. VSF Watch got the case proportions and the movement right.

The size. The 40mm Explorer is the first time Rolex has made the Explorer in this size. The 36mm is the original and the purist choice. The 40mm wears bigger and reads more like a contemporary sports watch than a vintage mountaineering piece. The case has the same tapered lugs and the same smooth bezel profile as the 36mm, just stretched to 40mm. The matte black dial with the 3-6-9 numerals is identical in layout. The larger dial surface gives the numerals more breathing room. Whether that is better or worse than the 36mm depends on your wrist and your preference. VSF got the 40mm case geometry right.
The dial. Matte black with applied 3-6-9 Arabic numerals, baton indices, and the Mercedes hands. Chromalight fill glows blue in the dark. No date. No complications. The Explorer dial is the same layout Rolex designed in 1953 for the first Everest expedition. It works because nothing on it is unnecessary. The matte finish kills reflections. VSF's dial print and lume application are clean.
The movement. Dandong 3230 automatic with a 72-hour power reserve. True no-date architecture. Two crown positions. No ghost date. Same movement as the 36mm Explorer and the Oyster Perpetual range.
The bracelet. Fully brushed Oyster with an Oysterlock clasp and a 5mm Easylink extension. No polished center links. The all-brushed finish hides scratches and matches the tool-watch identity. The bracelet is comfortable and the articulation is smooth.
