GMT-Master II reps have been stuck on the same handful of problems for years. The bezel colors were off under certain light. The case used the wrong lug profile. The movement was a decorated ETA with the wrong power reserve and no real GMT functionality. Any one of those would get spotted by someone who knew the reference. All three together made it hard to take GMT reps seriously.

VSF Watch V3 with the Dandong DD3285 movement addresses each of these. We put it next to a gen and a standard market version to see what actually changed.

1. Bezel: ceramic process and UV test

The bezel is the first thing anyone looks at on a GMT, and it's where most reps fail. Budget versions either get the color transitions wrong or use a printing process that fades after a few months.

VSF's V3 bezel goes through a multi-stage firing: the one-piece ceramic blank is sintered at 1000 degrees, treated with an aqueous solution, then fired again at 1600 degrees. After cooling, the numerals are filled with platinum PVD. The result is a bezel insert that holds its color and doesn't fade to grey as the fill wears down.

The UV test is the quick way to verify. Under a UV light, the VSF V3 bezel glows the same way gen does — the red half lights up evenly, no dead spots, no color shift. That only works if the ceramic mix is consistent through the entire blank. Cheaper mixes with uneven pigment distribution show dark patches under UV.

2. Dial, hands, and crystal

The "ROLEX" text on the dial is white, not greyish. Budget versions use a thinner, lower-contrast print that reads as dull grey next to gen or the VSF. The red GMT hand is bright red rather than the dark burgundy that older batches defaulted to. It's one of those things you don't notice until you see them side by side, and then you can't unsee it.

The center hand stack has a solid axis cap, not the hollow-pipe look that cheaper reps have where the hands mount. The hour markers have rounded, smooth edges. Lower-tier reps cut the markers flat with sharper corners, which catches light differently and reads as wrong even without a loupe.

The cyclops has a pinkish-white AR coating, matching gen. Standard market versions almost universally use blue AR, which is wrong and throws off the date font color when viewed off-angle.

3. Case: updated lugs, bezel teeth, and crown gap

Rolex updated the GMT-Master II case a few years ago, and most rep factories didn't follow. They kept using the older, bulkier 2018 case shape. VSF is the only factory that cloned the current-gen 2022/2023 case.

The lugs are slimmer and more tapered than the old version. The bezel teeth are shorter and wrap tighter around the crystal edge, which makes the rotation feel closer to gen — smooth, defined clicks rather than loose or gritty.

The crown gap is a detail worth mentioning. VSF engineered a 0.25mm gap between the crown and the case when the crown is fully screwed down. This prevents the crown from rubbing against the case during winding. Rolex does this on gen. Most rep factories don't bother, and over time the crown etches a circular scratch into the case flank. It's a small thing that has a real effect on how the watch ages.

4. DD3285 movement and engravings

The DD3285 is the main reason to buy this version. It's a true clone movement, not a decorated ETA. Hour-jumping GMT function works like gen: the local hour hand jumps independently in one-hour increments while the GMT hand stays on home time and the minutes keep running. A decorated ETA can't do this correctly.

Power reserve is 72 hours, same as gen. The old decorated ETA-based reps ran about 40-48 hours, which meant taking the watch off Friday evening and finding it dead by Sunday morning. Three days of reserve changes that.

The engraving on the rotor, the movement plates, and the clasp are deep-stamped rather than laser-etched. Under a loupe, the difference is obvious — stamped engravings have defined edges and depth. Etched ones look flat and washed out by comparison.

5. Bottom line

VSF Watch V3 GMT-Master II is the current benchmark for this reference. The three things that used to kill GMT reps — the bezel, the case shape, and the movement — are all fixed. The DD3285 is the biggest single improvement because it changes how the watch operates, not just how it looks. The UV-reactive bezel and the updated lug profile are the things you'll notice visually.

The main trade-off is the same as any clone movement: serviceability. The DD3285 is a specialized caliber, fewer watchmakers know it compared to an ETA-based movement, and parts aren't as widely available. If you live somewhere with access to a rep-friendly watchmaker, it's not an issue. If you don't, factor that in.

Make sure the unit you receive is actually a V3. The easiest checks: the UV bezel reaction, the updated lug shape, and the crown gap. If any of those three are off, you're looking at V2 or older stock.
